Wright named SportBC University Athlete of the Year
Trinity Western University soccer striker Nikki Wright was named SportBC’s 2008 University Athlete of the Year. Ms. Wright was so honoured at SportBC’s 43rd Annual Athlete of the Year Awards. The awards banquet celebrates the achievements of British Columbia’s sporting community.
“This is an amazing award and I’m still in shock,” said Nikki Wright. “It is a huge feat for our team. This is award shows the efforts of our entire team and how they backed me up all year.”
In 2008, Wright helped her school win the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy as CIS champions after a 1:0 win over Brock University in Langley, BC. Wright was one of the tournament all-stars. As for the regular season, she was not only a Canada West All-Star, but also the league’s Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
Ms. Wright was the lone soccer recipient on the 2008 honour list. She is the third soccer player to win the SportBC University Athlete of the Year award, following in the footsteps of Ken Whitehead (1976) and Rosalyn Hicks (2003).
