Women’s players assist with Shelter from the Storm campaign

Members of Canada’s women’s national team were on hand this Thursday 8 May for the Canadian Women’s Foundation Annual Radiothon. The players were there in support of the Shelter from the Storm campaign, a ground-breaking national campaign dedicated to stopping violence against women.

​Katie Thorlakson, Amy Vermeulen, Lexi Marton, Stephanie Labbé and Julie Armstrong all took time away from the team’s residency camp in Vancouver to help answer calls and take pledges during the event. Shelter from the Storm is the largest awareness campaign in Canada dedicated to stopping violence against women. The campaign raises much-needed money for shelters and programs.

​Half of the money raised through Shelter from the Storm goes directly to women’s shelters across the country. Shelter from the Storm is the only campaign in Canada that distributes funds to every shelter across Canada (all 450 shelters). The other half of money raised is granted through Canadian Women’s Foundation to violence prevention programs – working toward a future where one day there will be no need for shelters.

​Canada’s women’s national team, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is Teck Cominco, was ranked 9th in the most recent FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Rankings. The team is currently preparing for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament that takes place in Beijing from 6-23 August.
