The Vancouver Whitecaps pulled off a late 2:2 draw at home in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, winning another point in the standings against Toronto FC. While the Whitecaps were officially eliminated in the draw, it made things interesting for the series finale less than two weeks away.
Toronto FC remain in second place with just four points after three matches, still behind first-place Impact de Montréal who has six points after three matches. Toronto FC must win the series finale on 22 July at BMO Field against the Impact to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League. An Impact win or draw will send the Montréal team to the confederation tournament.
The Whitecaps-Toronto FC match at Swangard Stadium was played in front of a full house. The open and free-flowing match got its first goal late in the first half as Eduardo Sebrango scored his first of two goals. Toronto FC then scored twice – Maurice Edu in the 61st minute and Rohan Ricketts in the 75th minute – before Sebrango scored the equaliser in the 87th minute.
The Whitecaps finished their tournament with one win, one draw and two losses. The Whitecaps lost two matches against the Impact before winning four points against Toronto FC.
