Canada Soccer’s 2023 Canadian Championship winners will be crowned on Wednesday night when Vancouver Whitecaps FC host visiting CF Montréal at BC Place in the nation’s annual Battle of the North. Two-time winners Vancouver Whitecaps FC are the defending champions from 2022 while five-time winners CF Montréal were national champions just a year earlier in 2021.

\u200bIn this year’s Canadian Championship, Whitecaps FC have gone away to beat York United FC and Pacific FC in back-to-back rounds after receiving a bye from the preliminary round as the defending champions. CF Montréal, meanwhile, have been at home to beat Vaughan SC, gone away to beat Toronto FC, and come back home to beat Forge FC Hamilton.

\u200bSo far this year in the MLS standings after 16 matches, Vancouver Whitecaps FC are in sixth place in the Western Conference with 21 points while CF Montréal are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 19 points from 16 matches. Vancouver is coming off a 1:1 draw with Sporting KC while Montréal are coming off a 3:0 away loss to the Philadelphia Union. Earlier this year, Vancouver won 5:0 over CF Montréal in an April league match at BC Place.

\u200bAs both Vancouver Whitecaps FC and CF Montréal are original participants in the Canadian Championship from 2008, they have faced each other 16 times in the competition, most notably 2013 when Montréal lifted the Voyageurs Cup at BC Place and then 2015 when Vancouver won their first title also at BC Place. The two sides have not met each other in this competition since 2018 when Vancouver took a slight edge in the all-time head-to-head record with six wins against Montréal’s five wins.

\u200bAll time at BC Place in both MLS and Canadian Championship matches, Vancouver holds a decisive edge with seven wins, two draws and two losses since 2013.

\u200bThis year marks the 16th edition of Canada Soccer’s Canadian Championship, the nation’s highest club competition. The expanded 2023 format featured 14 clubs for the first time: eight clubs from the Canadian Premier League, three clubs from Major League Soccer, and league winners from League1 BC, League1 Ontario and League1 Québec.

\u200bAlongside the presentation of medals and the Voyageurs Cup, which will be walked out by a member of the Voyageurs Canadian supporters’ group, Canada Soccer will also present the George Gross Memorial Trophy to the competition’s Most Valuable Player and the Best Young Canadian award to the top player born 2000 or later.
