Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team Head Coach Even Pellerud has invited 22-players to attend the program’s first camp of 2005 from January 20th to 30th in Vancouver, BC.
The roster includes a mix of youth and veteran players and consists of 10 players from the Under-19 Women’s World Championship pool. The camp’s focus will be on practices and scrimmages, while camps in the spring and summer will be more game related.
“While our Under-19 team received major focus in 2004, it is now time to concentrate on a new cycle for the Women’s World Cup team leading up to the CONCACAF Qualifying tournament in 2006, and ultimately the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China,” stated Pellerud.
The camp, beginning on Thursday in Vancouver, will be the starting point for a team that is determined to improve on their fourth place finish at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup. “We are heading into a very interesting and exciting time with our full team. Our staff will help this team fulfill its ambitions of achieving world class level of play during the next four years.”
“With so many young players involved with this team, we need to manage carefully between soccer commitments and academic commitments.” As a result, some players will miss this camp to avoid jeopardizing their availability for later events.
The team will play a significant number of international friendlies in Europe, as well as in Canada in 2005. The game schedule will be released at a later date.
