Sarah Joly honoured by the University of Alberta Hall of Fame

Dr. Sarah Joly will be honoured by the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame as part of the Class of 2023 alongside two other athletes and one athlete/builder. Joly played her college soccer at the University of Alberta in the late 1990s, the same period during which she won the 1998 Concacaf Championship and represented Canada at the FIFA World Cup USA 1999.

At the University of Alberta, Joly was a two-time Canada West Player of the Year, the 1998 CIAU Player of the Year, and a three-time Kathlene Yetman Trophy winner as the top University of Alberta Academic All-Canadian. She helped the Pandas win the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy in 1997 as the CIAU national champions.

From 1996 to 1999, Joly also made 17 appearances for Canada at the international “A” level. An attacking player by trade, she dropped back to centre back to replace injured captain Janine Helland in 1998 and was the only player to feature in every minute of Canada’s eight international matches. At the 1998 Concacaf Championship, she helped Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team post five consecutive clean sheets to win their first confederation title. The following year after the FIFA World Cup, Joly helped the Edmonton Angels win Canada Soccer’s 1999 National Championships and then the University of Alberta finish second at the 1999 CIAU Soccer Championship.

The University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame Class of 2023 inductees are: Dr. Joly (soccer), Chris Bowie (swimming); Heather Denkhaus Parrish (rugby); and Dale Henwood (builder).
