Russell Teibert is ready to start his record 11th edition of the Canadian Championship, the most by any player since the competition was inaugurated in 2008. Teibert, who also co-leads the competition with 25 career matches, has played his entire career with Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player in 2015 when Whitecaps FC lifted the Voyageurs Cup as Canadian Championship winners.
Canada Soccer’s 2022 Canadian Championship Preliminary Round features five matchups on Tuesday 10 May and Wednesday 11 May, each of which will advance one team to the Quarterfinals. Already through to the Quarterfinals are Pacific FC, Toronto FC, and 2021 Canadian Championship winners CF Montréal.
The opening match day of the 2022 Canadian Championship will see League1 Ontario Champion Guelph United FC hosting Canadian Premier League side HFX Wanderers, while a pair of Provincial Canadian Premier League rivalries will feature Atletico Ottawa hosting York United FC and Cavalry FC hosting FC Edmonton. The Preliminary Round will conclude with two more matches on Wednesday 11 May as the Canadian Premier League’s Forge FC host Première ligue de soccer du Québec champions and CS Mont-Royal Outremont and Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC host Valour FC of the Canadian Premier league. Guelph United FC and CS Mont-Royal Outremont will both be making their debut in the competition.
As for Teibert, he was 18 years old when he made his Canadian Championship debut on 27 April 2011, a 1:0 away win over Montréal at Stade Saputo. Vancouver captain Terry Dunfield was the goalscorer with a header off a Teibert cross from the left side.
