Prize on the line in final championship match

With just one game remaining in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, all eyes will be on BMO Field for the championship finale on Tuesday 22 July in Toronto, ON. As things have played out, the outcome of the final match will determine the 2008 champions – be it a win or draw for the visiting Impact de Montreal or a win for the hosts Toronto FC.

​On the line is the championship trophy – the Voyageurs Cup – as well as a berth in 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League. Canadian Soccer Association president Dr. Dominic Maestracci will be on hand to present the trophy and medals to the winning team. As for the CONCACAF Champions League, the Canadian entry will be facing Nicaraguan club Real Estelí FC in the preliminary round in late August.

​All three Canadian teams – Toronto FC, the Impact and the Vancouver Whitecaps – will have played four games each by the time the championship wraps up. The Whitecaps finished its championship with four points (one win, one draw and two losses). Through three games, the Impact has six points (2-0-1) while Toronto FC has four points (1-1-1). Toronto FC won 1:0 over the Impact in the previous meeting on 27 May at Stade Saputo.

​Also before the final match, the Whitecaps’ Eduardo Sebrango is the leading goal scorer with two goals, both of which were scored in a 2:2 draw with Toronto FC on 9 July. Toronto FC’s three goals have been scored by Marco Velez, Maurice Edu and Rohan Ricketts. The Impact’s four goals have been scored by Severino Jefferson, Joey Gjertsen, Roberto Brown and David Testo.
