Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team Head Coach Even Pellerud has named 17 players to the squad which will take part in the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup (World Cup Qualifying) from October 30 – November 9. An 18th player will be added prior to Canada’s opening game against Haiti on October 30 at Centennial Stadium in Victoria, BC at 8:00 PT (live across the country on Rogers Sportsnet).

The squad includes eight members of the Under-19 team which won silver medals at the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship, Sasha Andrews, Erin McLeod, Candace Chapman, Carmelina Moscato, Christine Sinclair, Clare Rustad, Brittany Timko and Kara Lang. Sinclair makes her first senior team appearance since being named the Most Valuable Player at the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship after leading all players with 10 goals in six games.

Canadian veteran striker Charmaine Hooper will be looking to score her 50th international goal when the team begins its quest for a berth at the FIFA 2003 Women’s World Cup in China next September. Hooper has 49 goals in 83 appearances (all-time leader) and will captain the side.

Canada will face Haiti, Jamaica and Costa Rica in Group B action in Victoria, BC on October 30, November 1 and 3 respectively. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals in Seattle, Washington. The winners of each semi-final will advance to the final in Pasadena (Rose Bowl) and will each automatically earn a berth in the Women’s World Cup. The semi-final losers will face each other in the third-place game in Pasadena, with the winner moving on to face an Asian team in a playoff for another spot in the World Cup.

Canada will play a series of three exhibition games October 22nd, 23rd and 24th in Victoria. Each game will consist of two, twenty minute halves, followed by instructional coaching sessions with the Senior Women’s National Coaching team. All members of the media and general public are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee.
