Nocita And Stambrook Honoured In Manitoba

Former CSA President Fred Stambrook and former national team player Tony Nocita were inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame this past weekend in a ceremony held on Saturday, November 15th in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

​Fred Stambrook was inducted in the builder category; he first became a member of the Executive of the Manitoba Minor Soccer Association (MMSA) in 1970 and was elected as the first Vice President for the association in 1974. He served as President of the Canadian Youth soccer Association from 1975-79 and as member of the board for the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) for 12 years until 1986. In that time, Stambrook held the position of President of the Manitoba Soccer Association (MSA) from 1980-86 and became President of the CSA in 1986 for three consecutive terms to lead a successful Canadian effort to qualify for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico City. Following his tenure as President of the CSA, Stambrook continued as Past-President for the CSA from 1992-98. Stambrook also sat on the Board of the Canadian Olympic Association from 1986-92 and 1998.

​Tony Nocita was inducted in the player category as his playing career in soccer has spanned three decades. Now a player and assistant coach of the Sons of Italy Lions senior men’s soccer team who won the 2002 Canadian championship and four Manitoba Soccer Association Cups in eight years. Nocita won seven MSA Cups, a Canadian Soccer League Mita Cup with the Winnipeg Fury in 1992, and played for eight years (1986-93) with the Canadian Men’s team.

​Six athletes, two builders and two teams comprised the slate for the 24th Annual Ceremonies. Speed Skating Champion Susan Auch, Volleyball Olympian Mary Dempster, Stanley and Avco Cup Champion Ted Green from Hockey, and Softball legend Grant Skinner joined Nocita in the player category. Jeff Collins joined Stambrook in the builder category.
