Major League Soccer has honoured Canadian goalkeeper Pat Onstad for making the MLS Degree Men Save of the Year. The Houston Dynamo goalkeeper earned the award for his save on 19 April against Colorado Rapids’ Conor Casey.

Onstad actually made two terrific saves on the play. First, Onstad stopped the Casey penalty kick with a diving play. Onstad was diving to his right when he reached high with his left hand to stop the shot. He then quickly got up and protected the opposite side of the net on an ensuing Terry Cooke rebound shot. Onstad’s saves helped maintain a 1-0 lead for the Dynamo.

Onstad completed his seventh MLS season in 2009. The 41-year old goalkeeper is a two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and Best XI all-star. He is also a three-time MLS Cup champion, having won titles in 2003 with the San Jose Earthquake and in 2006 and 2007 with the Dynamo.

Major League Soccer is currently announcing many of its year-end awards in advance of this Sunday’s MLS Cup. The playoff final takes place in Seattle, WA between Real Salt Lake and the Los Angeles Galaxy. The match kicks off at 20.30 ET / 17.30 PT at Qwest Field.
