Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau will miss the coming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ after suffering a broken lower leg in the MLS Cup Final on Saturday 5 November. Crépeau, who set a Canadian record for most combined MLS minutes across the 2022 regular season and playoffs, helped Los Angeles FC win their historic first MLS Cup with a 3-0 win on kicks from the penalty mark following a 3:3 draw with Philadelphia Union. Crépeau was injured in the 116th minute and is expected to miss several months before he can return to action in 2023.

A two-time Allstate Canada Soccer Good Hands Award winner, the 28-year old Crépeau from Candiac, Québec led Los Angeles FC to both the MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in 2022. A former Player of the Year in both Ottawa and Vancouver, he was a Canadian Championship winner and Concacaf Champions League finalist in Montréal.

At the international level, Crépeau has made 15 international “A” appearances, including five matches in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and six matches at the Concacaf Gold Cup. He made his Canada Soccer youth program debut in 2010, represented Canada at the FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013, and made his international “A” debut on 6 February 2016 at age 21.

In the past two years, Crépeau helped Canada reach the Semifinals at the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup and helped Canada finish first overall in the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers as the Men’s National Team qualified for the FIFA World Cup™ for the first time in 36 years.
