Canadian midfielder Diana Matheson has become just the fourth player to make 100 starts for Canada’s women’s national team. Matheson was selected for her 100th start before the 21 January 2011 women’s international match against China PR. The international match was Canada’s first of three matches in this year’s edition of the Yongchuan Cup, a Four-Nation Women’s Tournament.
Matheson joins Charmaine Hooper, Christine Sinclair and Randee Hermus in the 100-start club. Matheson has been selected a starter in 100 of her 110 international appearances. Sinclair is the all-time leader with 145 starts in 149 matches. Hooper ranks second with 122 starts while Hermus ranks third with 102 starts.
Matheson made her first start back on 26 April 2003 in Washington, DC, her third appearance for Canada’s national team. Matheson had just celebrated her 19th birthday 10 days before that first start against USA.
Matheson has represented Canada at two FIFA Women’s World Cups (2003 and 2007), one Women’s Olympic Football Tournament (2008), one Pan American Games (2007), and four CONCACAF women’s championships (2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010). She made her 100th appearance last year on 15 September 2010 in Dresden, Germany.
