"body": "
Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team striker Jonathan David’s brilliant solo effort to score Canada’s second goal in a 6:0 victory over Cuba in Concacaf Nations League A was voted as the top play in Canada Soccer’s 2019 Plays of the Year campaign. David’s effort edged out Christine Sinclair’s fifth consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign goal in the Women’s National Team’s final Group E match against the Netherlands at the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019.

Against Cuba, the reigning Men’s National Team Player of the Year brought a pass out of the air with the outside of his foot just inside of the Cuba half. With a single touch he rounded one defender and patiently rolled the ball past another sliding tackle before placing the ball between the legs and under the Cuba goalkeeper to give Canada a 2:0 lead only 22 minutes into the match.

In 2019, David set a Men’s National Team joint-record with eight international goals, including a Canada record six goals at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Counting his 28 goals scored for both club and country, David is Canada’s highest scoring forward in a single year over the past 20 years. In addition to being named the 2019 Men’s National Team Player of the Year, David was Canada Soccer’s Player of the Month in June and September.

2019 Canada Soccer Plays of the Year final ranking

JONATHAN DAVID | Solo wonder-goal v Cuba 22%

CHRISTINE SINCLAIR | Goal at fifth consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup 21%

JAYDEN NELSON | Stunning hat-trick at Concacaf U-17 Championship 14%

LUCAS CAVALLINI | Sensational volley seals first win v USA in 34 years 13%

STEPHANIE LABBÉ | Penalty heroics at Algarve Cup 11%

KADEISHA BUCHANAN | Lift-off at FIFA Women’s World Cup 7%

JUNIOR HOILETT | Quick-thinking v French Guiana 6%

LUCAS CAVALLINI & JONATHAN DAVID | Double hat-tricks at Concacaf Gold Cup 4%

CLÉMENT DIOP | Diving save sends Montréal to Canadian Championship Final 1%

IGNACIO PIATTI | Long-range strike in Canadian Championship Final 1%

As part of the Canada Soccer 2019 Plays of the Year campaign, three CanadaRED prize packs were given to randomly selected voters who signed up for Canada Soccer’s CanadaRED newsletter.
