Jonathan David sets record for most goals by a Canadian in a top-5 European league

Jonathan David has set a record for most goals by a Canadian soccer player in a top-5 men’s European league. David from Orléans in Ottawa, Ontario scored his record-breaking 12th goal of the French 2020-21 Ligue 1 season on 7 May to set a new mark for a Canadian player in the established top leagues of either England, France, Germany, Italy or Spain.

Tomasz Radzinski held the previous mark with 11 goals scored during the English 2002-03 Premier League season with Everton FC.

David has scored 12 goals with Lille OSC as the team chases their first league championship in 10 years. Through 36 of 38 matches, Lille OSC are top of the table with 79 points and two matches remaining. Paris Saint-Germain, who have won seven of the past eight titles, are in second place with 75 points and three matches remaining.

This is Jonathan David’s first season in Ligue 1 with Lille OSC after a summer transfer from KAA Gent in Belgium where he was the Jupiler Pro League’s joint top scorer in 2019-20. David, the 2019 Canadian Player of the Year, was most recently the Canada Soccer Player of the Month for April 2021.
