Impact earns its first championship victory

The Impact de Montréal pulled away with a 2:0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps tonight, scoring two goals in the second part of the first half. Severino Jefferson and Joey Gjertsen scored the two Impact goals as the home side earned its first victory in the 2008 Nutrilite Canadian Championship. …

Impact goalkeeper Matt Jordan posted the clean sheet, stopping 12 shots in the win.

Jefferson opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Gjertsen made the shot that deflected off a Whitecaps defender. Jefferson picked up the rebound and scored the winner. Ten minutes later, Gjertsen made it 2-0 after receiving a pass from Mauro Biello.

The Nutrilite Canadian Championship runs 27 May to 22 July. Both the Impact and Whitecaps head west for the next match on 25 June at Swangard Stadium. The last three matches will take place in July: the Canada Day tilt between the Whitecaps at Toronto FC at BMO Field (1 July), the return match with Toronto FC visiting Vancouver (9 July), and the final match featuring the Impact at Toronto FC (22 July).
