Canada gained three points on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking and moved up four spots on the overall ranking. While Canada remains unchanged in the eighth spot within the confederation, Canada has moved up into 80th spot on the overall ranking released on 2 February.

\u200bThe FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year. Matches played more than a year ago are valued 50% of matches played in the last year (matches played more than two years ago are valued at 30% while matches played more than three years ago are valued at 20%).

\u200bCanada has not participated in official CONCACAF competition since 2009 when it reached the quarter-final stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. It is those official competitions which allow a country to gain the most points. Canada’s next international friendly match is this coming 9 February against the world’s number-10 ranked Greece. Canada’s next official competition is the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer.

\u200bWithin CONCACAF, big jumps were enjoyed by Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador, all of whom did well in the Central American official qualification competition for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. El Salvador enjoyed the biggest jump of 96 points.

\u200bCONCACAF’s top-three remain USA, Mexico and Honduras. Costa Rica, meanwhile, climbed back into its familiar fourth spot within the CONCACAF region. Jamaica, who ranked as high as third place two months ago following official competition in the Caribbean, has dropped to fifth within CONCACAF.

\u200bOn the overall FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, there was no change to the top nine spots. Canada’s next opponent Greece moved up from 11th to 10th on the global list.
