Fans send support to national team in Beijing

Canadian fans can send their support to the women’s national team in Beijing via a special email address, believe@soccercan.ca. Letters of support will be forwarded to the team as it undertakes its first-ever appearance in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

​Canada’s women’s national team is participating in the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament from 6-21 August. Canada begins the tournament in Group E with Argentina, China and Sweden. ​Canada’s women’s national team has been an inspiration to thousands of fans across the country. The team, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is Teck Cominco, qualified for the 2008 Summer Games after finishing second at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament in April. In 18 games this season, the team has a record of nine wins, six draws and fives losses. One of the highlights was a 1:1 draw with Brazil at BMO Field in Toronto, ON on 10 July.

​Canada, ranked 9th in the most recent FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings, has one of the best women’s programs in the world. It has high hopes for this year’s Olympics, which for Canada kicks off on 6 August against Argentina. There are a dozen countries participating, most of which consider themselves medal contenders. Favourites include number-one ranked United States, number-two ranked Germany and number-three ranked Brazil.
