CANW20 Advances to FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Round of 16

Canada secures a place in the Round of 16 with a dominant 6-0 victory over Tanzania

Canada Soccer’s U-20 Women’s National Team (CANW20) has advanced to the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026™ following a 6-0 victory over Tanzania on Friday in its final Group B match.

The result capped a strong response from Canada after the team opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw against England before falling 3-0 to Brazil in its second match. CANW20 entered its final group-stage match needing a positive result and delivered a dominant performance against Tanzania to secure its place in the knockout stage.

“We’re really proud of the response from the group. After a difficult result against Brazil, the players showed a lot of character, stayed together and came out with the performance we needed to keep our tournament going. We’ve earned the opportunity to continue in this tournament, and now our focus shifts to the next challenge. We’re excited for the opportunity to compete in the knockout stage and see what this group can do.”

Canada opened the scoring in the seventh minute through an own goal before Olivia Chisholm doubled the lead shortly after halftime. Annabelle Chukwu then added two goals in a 12-minute span to put Canada firmly in control, with Kaylee Hunter and Liana Tarasco rounding out the scoring.

Chukwu has now scored in two of Canada’s three matches in Poland, having also found the back of the net in Canada’s opening 1-1 draw against England. With three goals at the tournament, she leads Canada in scoring and has moved to 39 career goals with Canada’s women’s youth national teams. Chukwu first set the all-time youth scoring record in 2024, surpassing the previous mark held by Christine Sinclair.

Canada will now turn its attention to the knockout stage, where they will face France in the Round of 16 on Thursday 17 September at 9:00 ET / 6:00 PT at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź in Łódź, Poland.

Poland 2026 marks Canada’s 10th appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Canada’s best finish came at the inaugural tournament in 2002, when they reached the Final and won silver on home soil.
