Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association today announced its Women’s World Cup Team will host a two-game series against Brazil on July 17 and 20, as part of its ongoing preparation for the Women’s World Cup. The venue of the July 17 game will be announced at a later date while the July 20 game will be played at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa.

“As a result of the tremendous support shown by the local soccer community for our upcoming game against England, we are delighted to announce that we will be bringing one of the most exciting teams in the World to Ottawa,” said CSA Chief Operating Officer Kevan Pipe at a media conference for Thursday’s international friendly in Ottawa against England. “Brazil is generally considered one of the top five countries in the World in women’s soccer and their style of play and flair are always a joy to watch.”

Brazil earned their spot in the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup after winning all three games of the final round at the CONMEBOL Qualifying Tournament in Lima, Peru. Brazil beat Colombia 12-0 in their final game of the tournament on April 27, 2003.

Brazil has defeated Canada twice in their only two meetings; 2:1 on July 4, 1996 in South Dakota, USA, and 4:2 on June 4, 1999 in Portland Oregon, USA.

The CSA also announced the Women’s World Cup Team will play a two-game series against Mexico on June 12 and 14 in Mexico. The exact venues will be announced at a later date.

Ottawa’s Frank Clair Stadium is a 30,000 seat facility featuring a FieldTurf playing surface. The pitch has received “FIFA recommended” status and is therefore eligible to be used for international play at any level.
