Canadian success story on the international stage
Canada was the only nation in the world to earn a top-10 ranking in all three FIFA women’s competitions from 2014-15.
Canada has one of the world’s most successful programs in women’s international soccer. Along with finishing sixth at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™, Canada recently finished sixth at last year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 and eighth at least year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2014.
“We are very proud of our national team and how they represented our country at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™,” said Victor Montagliani, President of Canada Soccer and Chair of the National Organising Committee for the final competition. “There was tremendous pressure on them to perform at home. They showed Canadians and the world that they are true role models.”
Along with success on the pitch, Canada enjoyed support in the stands and across the country. Canada’s five home matches during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ average 48,380 spectators per match. The Canada quarter-final match on 27 June at BC Place drew 54,027 fans, a new record for a Canadian national team of any sport playing on home soil.
Canada’s national matches were also extremely popular on television, with Bell Media drawing 11.6 million unique viewers for Canada’s group stage (with Canada finishing first place for the first time in program history). Bell Media then drew 6.9 million unique Canadian viewers for Canada’s Round of 16 match on 21 June and 7.5 million unique Canadian viewers for the quarter-final match on 27 June.
