Canada Soccer has confirmed that the 2020 Canadian Championship Final between Forge FC Hamilton and Toronto FC will be played in the first quarter of 2021. The Canadian Championship Final has been moved until early 2021 due to current pandemic restrictions, with a date and location to be determined in consideration of club and league schedules.
The 2020 Canadian Championship Final will be the
first-ever meeting between the two Ontario sides.
Forge FC qualified for the 2020 Canadian
Championship Final for the first time after finishing first at the Canadian
Premier League’s Island Games. Toronto FC qualified after finishing first among
three Canadian teams in the first phase of Major League Soccer’s revised
schedule. The seven-time champions have reached the Canadian Final in
five-consecutive years since 2016.
The Canadian Championship is Canada Soccer’s
highest domestic professional soccer competition. This year, 11 professional
teams in the Canadian Premier League and Major League Soccer played a combined
44 league matches as qualification to the 2020 Canadian Championship Final.
Since 2008, Canada Soccer’s Canadian Championship has featured 14 different Canadian teams across more than 100 matches. To date, Toronto FC have won the competition seven times, the Impact de Montréal four times, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC once.
