Canada captured bronze at the London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament by defeating France 1:0.
Canada won bronze at the London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. The Olympic medal was a first in program history, also Canada’s best-ever finish at one of the two major- women’s “A” tournaments. Canada finished third in the competition behind silver-medal winners Japan and gold-medal winners USA.
The 12-team London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament ran 25 July to 9 August in Great Britain. Canada’s matches were played in Coventry, Newcastle and Manchester. Four of Canada’s six matches were played in Coventry, including the bronze-medal win over France on 9 August (a Canada 1:0 win). Canada posted three wins, one draw and two losses in the competition.
From the goal out, Canada’s Olympic squad featured Karina LeBlanc and Erin McLeod as goalkeepers, Emily Zurrer, Carmelina Moscato, Robyn Gayle, Rhian Wilkinson, Candace Chapman, Chelsea Stewart, Lauren Sesselmann, Melanie Booth and Marie-Eve Nault as defenders, and Kaylyn Kyle, Diana Matheson, Desiree Scott, Christine Sinclair, Sophie Schmidt, Melissa Tancredi, Kelly Parker, Jonelle Filigno, Brittany Timko and Christina Julien from the midfield up through to the attack.
