Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association announced today its Men’s World Cup Team will play friendlies against Spain and Luxembourg this fall. The Canadians will travel to Spain to take on the Spanish (currently No. 9 in the FIFA rankings) on Saturday, September 3. Canada will also head back to Europe to play Luxembourg on November 16. Both games are to be played on international dates.

“Obviously Spain represents another very difficult opponent,” said Canadian head coach Frank Yallop who yesterday returned from the Gold Cup where Canada finished with a 1-2 record after posting a 2-1 win over Cuba on Tuesday. “Playing against these strong teams will help us as we look to the future of the program. We are trying to get a balance between playing in Europe which is easier for our players and the need to play more games at home in our region.”

“I was pleased overall with our performances at the Gold Cup and I feel we were unlucky to not get through to the quarter-finals. If we had finished off a few more of the chances that we created then we would be in Houston right now preparing to play Mexico. The Spain game will allow us the opportunity to keep looking at potential players and see if they can handle stepping up another level.”
