Canada are undefeated with back-to-back draws in the group phase at the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup after an intense 0:0 draw with Guatemala. Canada got their point in front of a packed, pro-Guatemala crowd at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, but they now face a must-win scenario in their group finale against Cuba in the same venue three days later on Tuesday 4 July.
“We experienced the heat tonight and with Guatemala you know it’s going to be a dog fight,” said John Herdman, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Head Coach. “We’ve got to win our third match against Cuba and push the goal difference to take our country to the Quarterfinals.”

Guatemala and Guadeloupe, who will face each other on the last group day, lead Group D with four points each. Canada have two points, so a win for three points could potentially jump them into first or second place ahead of either Guatemala or Guadeloupe.
Goalkeeper Milan Borjan, who now holds the Canada goalkeeper record for most starts with the captain’s armband (16), posted his 35th career clean sheet (also a Canada record). While Borjan made his 77th international “A” appearance, youngsters Ali Ahmed, Moïse Bombito and Zac McGraw each made their second career appearances since the start of the Concacaf Gold Cup. That trio, along with Jacen Russell-Rowe and Dominick Zator, made their debuts on 27 June against Guadeloupe.
