Canada Soccer Technical Director Tony Fonseca completed successful visits to Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. The visits and meetings with the provinces’ technical leaders were part the technical department’s commitment to visit provincial and territorial soccer associations in 2016.

Having already visited the technical leaders in Ontario, British Columbia, Québec, and New Brunswick, Fonseca’s visits are now halfway complete. The tour provides Fonseca with the ability to visit with their provincial counterparts to not only hear about the success and challenges of each association, but, also to learn from and engage with the provincial stakeholders.

“These visits give us the ability to see directly the challenges and opportunities that are inherent in such a broad and diverse nation,” said Fonseca, whose vision is a unified, cohesive player development system to bring Canada long-term soccer success. ”In addition to ongoing technical meetings I am able to conduct with the provincial technical leaders, these trips allow me to be exposed to those challenges and try and help address them in person.”

The Canada Soccer Pathway is the technical department’s roadmap for player development with the aim of encouraging lifelong participation. The Pathway is built around the principles of Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) with three streams of play: recreational, competitive and EXCEL. The Canada Soccer EXCEL Program channels our nation’s exceptional players into the best soccer environments.
