Canada Soccer announced today the launch of the She CAN Coach initiative, a national women coach recruitment, development, and training program. The program aims to ensure more women and girls enjoy the benefits of soccer by addressing the current challenges that they face relating to participation. Women sports leaders play a critical role in creating a welcoming and safe space in sport. This program will strive to support and advance gender equity in sport by breaking down the barriers of entry for women to coach, with the desired outcome to balance the current gender gap in players between boys and girls.

“She CAN Coach will align clubs nationwide to actively recruit, develop and inspire women to become coaches in our game by eliminating barriers, providing a welcoming environment, and ensuring all women interested in coaching have a place where they feel they belong,” added Sara McConaghy, Manager of Development Programming, Canada Soccer.

Canada Soccer is pleased to announce Alberta Soccer and Soccer Nova Scotia as Member Association Partners for the inaugural launch and first phase of the She CAN Coach Program. As a Member Association Partner, Alberta Soccer and Soccer Nova Scotia will be instrumental in the initial Club recruitment and onboarding phase.

“Alberta Soccer is excited to be given the opportunity to take part in the inaugural phase of the She CAN Coach Program, which will benefit the women in our soccer community,” added Lisa Grant, Executive Director, Alberta Soccer.

“We are thrilled to work with Canada Soccer to pilot the She CAN Coach program in Nova Scotia” added Lindsay MacAskill, Executive Director of Soccer Nova Scotia. “She CAN Coach aligns with Soccer Nova Scotia’s commitment to bridging the gender gap across all levels of participation in our sport.  We are taking many steps toward our vision through an aligned partnership like this. As we work with our member clubs to increase access for women coaches while limiting barriers to participation, we are excited to facilitate this partnership.”

Clubs in Alberta and Nova Scotia interested in submitting an application to participate in the initial phase of this program will be able to do so until 31 July 2023
