Canada Soccer adds Kyle Hiebert to squad for Concacaf Nations League

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team have called up Kyle Hiebert to their Concacaf Nations League squad for the March 2023 window with upcoming matches away against Curaçao and back home against Honduras in Toronto. The 25-year old centre back is in his first Major League Soccer season with league leaders St. Louis CITY SC. He replaces injured centre back Kamal Miller from CF Montréal who will be unavailable for these two matches.

​The two-match international series features Canada’s first home match since the Men’s National Team’s historic run to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. Canada play away against Curaçao on Saturday 25 March (21.00 local) and then back home against Honduras on Tuesday 28 March (20.00 local). ​Canada (1W-0D-1L) have two matches remaining in their League A Group C schedule while their opponents Curaçao (1-0-2) and first-place Honduras (2-0-1) have one match left each. ​Hiebert from La Salle, Manitoba is one of three first-time call ups to Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team for the March 2023 international window, joining goalkeeper Tom McGill from Brighton & Hove Albion FC as well as midfielder Victor Loturi from Ross County FC. Hiebert previously represented Canada U-18 at the international youth level when he featured in a pair of 1:1 draws against France and Uruguay in 2014 at Limoges, France.

​Last season, Hiebert was named to the 2022 MLS NEXT Pro Best XI after making 24 appearances with St. Louis CITY 2. In 2023, he has featured in every minute of CITY SC’s four-straight victories in February and March. He scored his first MLS goal on 11 March on a winning header in the 2:1 away win over Portland Timbers FC. He helped the team post their first clean sheet one week later at home against the San Jose Earthquakes.

​Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team are the reigning Kings of Concacaf, having finished first overall in the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers from September 2021 to March 2022. It marked the third time that Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team won a Concacaf title, having previously won the 1985 Concacaf Championship and the 2000 Concacaf Gold Cup.

​Across FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers, Canada posted 14 wins, four draws and just two losses over three rounds as they became the first nation from the region to qualify for Qatar with a 4:0 home win on 27 March 2022 in Toronto. Canada scored a Men’s National Team record 54 goals across the cycle while Cyle Larin set the Canadian record for goals (13), Alphonso Davies set the Canadian record for assists (eight), and Milan Borjan set the Canadian record for clean sheets (nine). Of note, both Larin (13) and Jonathan David (nine) were the top-two goalscorers across all Concacaf nations in 2021-22 FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers.

​Throughout the qualifying campaign, Canada set numerous team and individual records, also setting a Concacaf record for the longest undefeated streak in a FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers campaign. Canada set their own Men’s National Team records for consecutive wins (eight) and longest home undefeated streak (14 matches). Across 2021, Canada were the “Most Improved Side” on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings.
