Canada remains in three-team fight for two spots to next round

Canada suffered a 2:0 defeat to Panama in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers action in Panama City on Tuesday 11 September.

Canada, Honduras and Panama remain the front runners in a group chase for two spots in next year’s CONCACAF Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The group standings were turned on their head on Match Day 4 after home sides Panama and Honduras won their Tuesday 11 September 2012 matches.

Panama won 2:0 over Canada in Panama while Honduras won 1:0 over Cuba in Honduras. Panama now leads the group with nine points while Honduras and Canada chase with seven points each. Cuba was officially eliminated as it lost its fourth-straight match in the CONCACAF 3rd Round of 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Brazil.

“The group changed a little bit tonight,” said Canadian captain Kevin McKenna. “We will now need plenty of home support for a massive match in Canada.”

The next match day is Friday 12 October. Canada will host Cuba at BMO Field while Panama will host Honduras at the Estadio Romel Fernandez. The sixth and final match day is Tuesday 16 October when Honduras hosts Canada and Cuba hosts Panama.
