The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year.

Canada picked up one point between the last two rankings after concluding its 2009 series against USA. Canada lost 0:1 to USA in back-to-back matches in Rochester, NY (19 July) and Charleston, SC (22 July). Canada and USA did not play any other games in the ranking window because their stars were participating in the inaugural Women’s Professional Soccer season.

While USA continues to rank first, the rest of the table was affected by the recent UEFA Women’s World Championship. Champion Germany moved up into second place while runner-up England moved into eighth place. Italy, who reached the quarter-final stage, switched places with Canada as it moved from 13th to 11th place.

FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking

1 USA 2,197

2 Germany 2,162

3 Brazil 2,125

4 Sweden 2,069

5 Korea DPR 2,026

6 Japan 2,011

7 Norway 1,998

8 England 1,977

9 Denmark 1,972

10 France 1,954

11 Italy 1,948

12 China PR 1,946

13 Canada 1,939

14 Australia 1,892

15 Russia 1,865

",
