The draw was played in front of Canada’s home crowd at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, AB. In doing so, Canada played the role of spoiler, pushing back Mexico’s potential qualification to the next round by another month. Mexico remains in first place in the group, but still needs at least one point to qualify to the CONCACAF final round.

Mexico has 10 points after five matches, but has collected just one point in its last two matches. Mexico leads Group 2 ahead of Honduras (9 points), Jamaica (7 points) and Canada (2 points). Jamaica jumped up in the standings tonight with a 1:0 victory over Honduras.

Canada carried the lead in its match twice, first on a goal by Ali Gerba and then on a goal by Tomasz Radzinski. Mexico got its equalisers from Carlos Salcido and Matias Vuoso. In the Jamaica-Honduras match in Kingston, Jamaica, Luton Shelton scored the lone goal in the win.

Canada is currently taking part in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. Canada’s sixth and final match of the stage takes place on 19 November in Kingston. Canada has already been eliminated from the group and will not advance to the CONCACAF final stage in 2009.

Also on 19 November, Mexico will travel to Honduras to look for at least one point. Honduras, however, has not lost at home to Mexico in FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers since 1993.

The 19 November match-day will be the last for the CONCACAF Stage III qualification. Only the top-two teams in three separate groups will advance to the CONCACAF final stage. While no teams have confirmed their passage in Group 2, the United States, Costa Rica and El Salvador have qualified for the final stage.

In 2009, the top three teams in the six-team group will automatically advance to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. The fourth-place team, meanwhile, will advance to a playoff to face the fifth-place team from the CONMEBOL group.

        Paulo Senra
Chief Communications & Content Officer | Chef des communications et du contenu, Canada Soccer

                <use xlink:href="#icon-paper-plane"></use>
            psenra@canadasoccer.com

                <use xlink:href="#icon-mobile"></use>
            (416) 882-7919

",
