Canada opens qualifiers against Trinidad & Tobago

​Canada’s women’s national team will face Trinidad & Tobago in the opening match of the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament on Wednesday 2 April. The two teams will kickoff at 17.00 local time (20.00 ET) at the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juarez in Ciudad Juarez, México.

​All of Canada’s matches at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament will be webcast on CBCSports.ca. Canada’s first two matches (2 April against Trinidad & Tobago and 6 April against Costa Rica) as well as the two semi-finals will be broadcast on GolTV. Tournament matches will also be televised by host broadcaster PCTV in México.

​Canada’s head coach Even Pellerud explains that Trinidad & Tobago is “a very skillful team and a very fast team. We will trust our own strengths, though, moreso than matching up with our opposition.”

​Canada’s senior team has faced Trinidad & Tobago four times, but not 19 August 1994 in Montréal. Canada won all four of its games against Trinidad & Tobago between 1991 and 1994. The Canadian match will be followed by México – Jamaica at 19.30.

​Canada’s senior team, whose title sponsor is Winners, is looking to qualify for this summer’s Olympics. The team needs to finish amongst the top two teams in the six-team tournament to advance. That means winning the semi-final match against a team from the opposite group (México, Jamaica or the United States) on 9 April. Before the semi-final, Canada faces Trinidad & Tobago on 2 April and Costa Rica on 6 April.
