Canada opens Olympics with a win

With an opening-day victory over Argentina, Canada is in first place in Group E with three points, tied with hosts China at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Canada won 2:1 over Argentina while China won 2:1 over Sweden. Both matches were played at the Tianjin Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Tianjin.All other teams were in competition today, still 48 hours before the Olympic Games’ official Opening Ceremonies in Beijing. In Group F in Shenyang, Germany played to a 0:0 draw with Brazil while Korea DPR won 1:0 over Nigeria. In Group G in Qinhuangdao, Japan drew 2:2 with New Zealand while Norway won 2:0 over the United States.Canada (1-0-0) is participating in its first Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Canada faces hosts China next on Saturday 9 August at the Tianjin Olympic Sports Center Stadium. The match kicks off at 19.45 (07.45 Eastern or 04.45 Pacific) and will be broadcast on CBC and CBCSports.ca. Canada’s third match will be in Beijing at the Workers’ Stadium on Tuesday 12 August. Canada will face group opponent Sweden for a 19.45 kickoff (07.45 Eastern or 04.45 Pacific).The 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament runs 6-21 August. There are 12 teams (three groups of four) participating in the opening round from 6-12 August.
