Canada opened the Yongchuan Cup Four Nations Women’s Tournament in first place following a 3:2 victory over host China PR. Canada won three full points with the win on Friday 21 January at the Olympic Sports Center in Yongchuan. Sweden also picked up three points on the opening day, pulling off a 2:1 victory over USA.
Canada next faces USA on 23 January while Sweden faces the host China PR. Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck, then faces Sweden on the final match day on 25 January.
Canada extended its current unbeaten streak to 11 matches, a new national record. Canada has nine wins and two draws dating back to 30 September 2010. Canada started the streak with a 3:1 victory over China PR at BMO Field in Toronto.
It also marked the first time Canada has beaten China PR in China and the first time Canada has beaten this opponent in back-to-back matches.
In the most recent victory over China PR, Canada overturned a two-goal deficit to win 3:2. After You Jia scored two goals in the first half, Tancredi cut the lead in half and then captain Christine Sinclair scored back-to-back goals with the winner scored on the last rush of the match. Sinclair increased her career total to 114 goals and is now tied for fifth all time with Julie Fleeting of Scotland.
