Canada makes final preparations in Honduras

Canada made its final on-field preparations this evening in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Canada was given one hour on the Estadio Olimpico field to prepare for tomorrow’s all-important FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers match against Honduras. Canada must win to climb back into its group standings.

The Canada-Honduras match kicks off at 19.30 MT. The match will be broadcast live on Sportsnet Pacific and Sportsnet West (18.30 PT / 21.30 ET) for those viewers with all four Sportsnet channels.

“A win and the standings look all different,” said coach Dale Mitchell. “We have to go out there to win the game (against Honduras). We’ll see what happens after that.”

Canada’s closed-door session featured all 18 players. Coach Dale Mitchell has yet to announce his starting XI for tomorrow’s match, although he already has the list in his mind. One thing for sure, it won’t be the same as featured in recent matches. Because of injuries and suspensions, there are six new players in Canada’s lineup since the last Canada-Honduras match on 6 September.

Canada is currently taking part in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. Canada plays Honduras on the road on 11 October (match-day five) and Mexico at home on 15 October (match-day six). After three matches, Canada is in third place in Group 2 with one point, trailing Honduras (six points) and Mexico (nine points). Canada needs a big win against Honduras to gain ground in the standings. Only the top-two teams will advance after six matches. In other CONCACAF action, the United States leads Group 1 ahead of Guatemala, Trinidad & Tobago and Cuba while Costa Rica leads Group 3 ahead of El Salvador, Haiti and Suriname.
