Canada’s men’s national team will advance to the quarter-final stage after finishing first in Group A at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada finished first with seven points in three games in the opening phase of the biennial confederation championship.

Canada moves to Philadelphia tomorrow to await the second-place team from Group B (USA, Honduras, Haiti or Grenada). Canada’s quarter-final match will be played on 18 July at Lincoln Financial Field.

Canada has posted two wins and one draw at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada won 1:0 over Jamaica on 3 July (Los Angeles), won 1:0 over El Salvador on 7 July (Columbus), and drew 2:2 with Costa Rica on 10 July (Miami).

Behind Canada, Costa Rica finished second in the group phase with four points while Jamaica finished third with three points. Costa Rica is through while Jamaica must wait two days to see if they advance (only two of the third-place teams qualify for the quarter-final stage). Jamaica jumped ahead of El Salvador with a 1:0 win on Friday night.
