VANCOUVER (BRITISH COLUMBIA) – Canada’s women’s national team kicked off their final two-week training camp today before they leave for the FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007 at the end of the month. The camp runs 8-21 August in Vancouver, the home of the team’s year-long residency camp.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007 takes place 10-30 September. There are 16 teams divided into four groups. In the opening round, Canada plays Norway on 12 September in Hangzhou, Ghana on 15 September in Hangzhou, and Australia on 19 September in Chengdu. The top two teams in the group advance to the second round.
The team will have daily trainings along with a few rest days and a few exhibition matches against local British Columbia clubs. All of Canada’s top players are included in the camp. The final roster for Canada’s FIFA Women’s World Cup team is expected to be announced in the final week of August.
Canada is participating in their fourth FIFA Women’s World Cup, having previously qualified for Sweden 1995, USA 1999 and USA 2003. At USA 2003, Canada had its best showing with a fourth-place finish. In June 2007, Canada was ranked ninth on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings for women’s football.
