2009 Referees and Assistant Referees

All seven Canadian referees were in fact retained from the 2008 FIFA List. Those seven referees are Steve Depiero, Mauricio Navarro, Silivu Petrescu, Paul Ward, Carol-Ann Chénard, Darci Kruse and Michelle Pye. Of note in 2008, Ms. Chénard took part in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Chile 2008 while Ms. Pye took part in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008.

Amongst the six Canadian assistant referees on the 2009 FIFA List, there is in fact one new member: Shauna Poirier. Poirier was nominated along with returning officials Daniel Belleau, Darren Clark, Joe Fletcher, Hector Vergara and Suzanne Morrisett.

Along with the FIFA announcement, the Canadian Soccer Association announced its 2009 list of referees and assistant referees. The national list features 17 referees (14 male and three female) and 19 assistant referees (16 male and three female). New to the 2009 list are Mark Budda (referee from British Columbia), John Oliva (referee from Ontario), Richard Gamache (assistant referee from Quebec), John Gray (assistant referee from Nova Scotia), and Justine Lewis (assistant referee from Prince Edward Island).

Canadian officials on the International and National lists operate on a regular basis in professional soccer, both Major League Soccer and United Soccer Leagues.
